COVID-19
LANDLORDS NOT PLAYING BALL
In a previous communique, NEASA communicated the reported attempts made by the various commercial landlords to assist SMMEs in the retail sector during the Covid-19 lockdown. To view this newsletter, please click here.
However, after a survey conducted among our members in retail, it has become clear that the majority of commercial landlords are in fact not granting any means of rental relief to their tenants.
In some cases, where relief was proposed, it amounted to meager solutions to this imminent problem. Some landlords have already issued letters of demand to their tenants for non-payment.
It should be noted that only 10% of the participants of the survey confirmed that they can afford to pay rent, either in full or partially, during the lockdown period – presuming that the lockdown is completely lifted at the end of April.
This dire situation, affecting an enormous number of SMMEs, calls for a stand on the side of the retail sector.
If tenants do not survive this period, neither will the landlords.
We therefore invite all employers in retail to attend the webinar today, Tuesday 14 April 2020 at 4pm, as hosted by the business growth expert, Pavlo Phitidis, to understand how to negotiate with your landlord to ensure a win-win outcome to this unprecedented shutdown.
