Potential Power Cuts in Johannesburg

Urgent Notice

Dear employer

Eskom has announced its intention to reduce or interrupt electricity supply to specific areas of Johannesburg, starting 3 January 2025. This decision follows a longstanding payment dispute with the City of Johannesburg (CoJ), which currently owes Eskom R4.9 billion, with an additional R1.4 billion due at the end of November 2024. Despite ongoing discussions, CoJ has not fulfilled payment agreements, citing unsubstantiated claims of overbilling.

In recent developments, CoJ has agreed to pay Eskom R1.4 billion by the end of November to avoid power cuts - whether this will realise, remains to be seen. Should payment not be made, Eskom may proceed with its plan to interrupt power in certain areas, including the Fordsburg, Beyers, Crowthorne, and Allandale substations, which supply power to Johannesburg CBD, Fairlands, Midrand, and surrounding regions.

Eskom has invited affected parties to submit written comments, suggestions, or objections by 5 December 2024, which will be considered before a final decision is announced on 20 December 2024.

Employers located in affected areas or concerned about this matter are encouraged to submit their comments directly to Eskom at cpsubmissions@eskom.co.za.

This dispute presents significant risks to businesses in the impacted regions. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates on any developments that may affect your operations.
