AMSA vs the Steel Downstream

On 2 November 2020, we published a communique under the heading …
‘AMSA’s arrogance and the DTIC’s naivety KNOWS NO BOUNDS’

The following are comments by a few steel businesses:

  • The Steelmaster plan is based on supply from a single-aging facility whose uncompetitiveness will require years of governmental support by means of import protection. The question is: why would the government continue to entertain this increasingly uncompetitive company at the expense of public interest, have our policymakers not learned the lessons from the past with the same entity founded guilty by the Competition Commission who only focus on boosting shareholders profits at the expense of domestic steel users?
  • Some people have to understand that there are much easier ways for a business owner to make money than to run a business. They must stop adding to business frustrations, risks, and unnecessary demands. We have enough to cope with. Businesses are suffering and have been for a few years now.
  • AMSA has not bothered investing in its old and outdated infrastructure. They have instead found that doing business in South Africa is easier by manipulating politicians than by actually being efficient and productive. It is these practices that are not sustainable and will inevitably end with the destruction of our economy. Typical socialist thinking!!
  • At present, there are no IPE section 120, all the way to 200, available in South Africa and AMSA wants further import protection. This is equivalent to corrupt profiteering.
