STEEL INDUSTRY: AMSA vs the STEEL DOWN STREAM: BUSINESS RESPONSE
AMSA vs the Steel Downstream
On 2 November 2020, we published a communique under the heading …
‘AMSA’s arrogance and the DTIC’s naivety KNOWS NO BOUNDS’
The following is another comment by a steel business:
We have had to import steel and pay duties, which makes us less competitive than if we did not have to pay duties at all because firstly, we can not rely on AMSA and secondly, they have eliminated their competitors having a monopoly in coated steel products.
I can not help but see the similarities between the Gupta’s state capture and the AMSA state capture. Why would the state continue to protect a business that is causing harm to the South African steel economy, at the expense of the rest of the steel economy and South African labour market, unless there is a financial benefit to a few selected cronies?
There is no logical reason. Please can someone explain this to us?
