Steel Industry: ITAC's unparalleled arrogance and ignorance.
STEEL INDUSTRY
ITAC’s UNPARALELLED ARROGANCE AND IGNORANCE
Dear employer
On 20 September 2024, ITAC published the proposed anti-dumping duties on several structural and hot-rolled steel products imported from China, Taiwan, Japan and Thailand.
Despite the window for public comments on the proposed duties only closing on 11 November 2024, incredulously, irrationally and unfairly, ITAC provisionally implemented some of these proposed duties from 29 November 2024 until end of May 2025, up to 52% on certain products.
How arrogant and ignorant can ITAC be? Wherein lies the fairness and rationality of implementing these duties pre-emptively, without proper consideration of the vital input and commentary from employers and businesses in the steel industry regarding the devastating effects of the duties?
NEASA itself, on behalf of all employers in the steel downstream, also submitted commentary, clearly indicating to ITAC the destructive nature and consequences of the duties. To read the full commentary, click here.
As NEASA previously stated, ITAC, and by extension, the DTIC and Government, are clearly dead set on destroying the entire steel industry and its contribution to the economy, purely to protect their self-interest and the stakes they have in AMSA and other monopolies in the industry – all to the extreme detriment of the remaining downstream steel industry employers and the hundreds of thousands of people they employ.
