In this open letter, the following issues are dealt with:
- The South African Steel Industry’s 35 years of decline
- The 10 percent customs duties already severely prejudices the downstream industry
- There is no downstream support for the protectionist measures
- Does South Africa really need AMSA?
- The threat of job losses by AMSA
- The South African steel downstream demands untaxed access to more affordable imported steel
- South Africa has to find an alternative model
- AMSA’s promise to upgrade its facilities does not benefit the steel downstream
- A leopard cannot change its spots – AMSA cannot be trusted
- A string of detrimental deals already entered into
- Downstream frustration will destabilise the Steel Industry
- Request for high level meeting between the steel downstream and government
